Internship Diaries - Imperfection
What is one area I can learn more about in order to be better at my job?
One of my main goals for my internship was to learn better and more affective ways to construct garments and learn more about historical accuracies. Over the past two months, I can happily say I have been able to shadow important costume design processes that allow me to know better understand what I want for myself and my future career. Currently assuming that I will continue along the path of costuming and/or historical fashion, I think that my time at the Nashville REP has been very valuable. Some things I have been focusing on recently while interning have been slowing down and taking my time. Stitch work for theatrical costumes does not have to be as precise since it will be viewed from so far away. This is something necessary to consider but it is also important to try my best on every project. It is easy to get into the mindset of “imperfection” when you know it won’t matter, so I’ve been trying to get out of that habit. My biggest job for the week was creating a new gown for Christmas Carol and although the pattern was relatively easy to follow, the fabric was extremely thick. I focused on keeping my speed slow as I joined the pieces together to create nicer lines, even though they may not be seen by the whole audience.
